African solutions for Africa is an adage that ViacomCBS Networks Africa (VCNA) continuously aims to uphold in the content it produces across its platforms. With COVID-19 being a pandemic that has undeniably infiltrated all facets of life, it is important for VCNA to reflect this reality through its content, spotlighting the African narrative. This is why BET Africa has partnered with the African Presidential Leadership Center (APLC) to bring conversations about COVID-19 and its implications, specifically within the continent’s context, through a three-part event titled COVID CONVERSATIONS.

COVID CONVERSATIONS is a tripartite virtual and in-studio event that will air on BET Africa. The innovative African dialogue event focuses on contributing to the continental and global conversation on Africa’s Road to Recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This partnership with BET Africa and the APLC is symbolic and synergistic. The APLC is a South African-based NGO that has a continental focus and acts on a global scale. The research, projects, and programmes the APLC produces, provides insights into contemporary trends and developments in Africa, with a focus on connecting former African leaders with the continents’ next generation of leaders. This blends exceptionally well with VCNA’s objective of exuding an authentic African narrative that rings true to Africans across the spectrum, while aligning ourselves to a globally diverse audience.

“As always, African content by Africans is a top priority for us. This collaboration with the APLC is important for VCNA as a network and the BET Africa brand which celebrates African culture, excellence and storytelling. The African perspective is widely embedded in this project because ‘Africa first’ is a motto both affiliations uphold. The special guests include esteemed leaders and industry pioneers who offer independent, yet enlightened insights into the issues during this unprecedented time.”, says Monde Twala, Senior Vice President and General Manager at ViacomCBS Networks Africa and BET International Peer Lead.

Given the perpetuating Western solutions around the pandemic, the event intends on highlighting how the response to the pandemic should rather be Africanised, to make the solutions more liable and effective, as opposed to mimicking unobtainable Western solutions.

"COVID Conversations is APLC's effort to engage and empower African governments and citizens to chart its path toward recovery from the COVID crisis. Our partnership with BET Africa ensures that we will be able to reach millions of Africans across the continent, which increases the odds that the continent will be able to get from where it is to where it wants to be,” said Ambassador Charles Stith: Non-Executive Chairman of the African Presidential Leadership Center.

The event features host, Zambian-born South African actress, television producer and presenter Masechaba Khumalo, a BET Africa returning favorite who has previously worked on a number of channel initiatives. The event profiles a panel of distinguished participants and special guests from esteemed leaders and industry pioneers from former President of the Republic of South Africa H.E. Kgalema Motlanthe, Regional Director of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for Sub-Saharan Africa, Angela Ndambuki and US Congressman Alex Green, to name a few. With pre-recorded messages woven into the event audience questions which encourage authentic perspectives to direct African solutions will also be spotlighted.

COVID CONVERSATIONS will air on BET Africa on Sunday, 23 May 2021 on DStv channel 129 at 19:00 CAT. This partnership is in line with VCNA’s ongoing commitment to unleash authentic African content that inspires social impact across our various brands, which includes MTV Base’s Virtual Africa Day concert in partnership with YouTube and Idris Elba, as well as a partnership with Malaria No More’s Draw the Line campaign focused on youth education and awareness with the goal of eradicating the disease.
