Johannesburg, 5 November 2019: After months of suspense and anticipation, the South African original biopic, Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story, will premiere on Wednesday 06 November at 21:30 CAT on BET Africa (DStv channel 129). At the recent launch in Johannesburg, KB Motsilanyane and Bahumi Madisakwane were announced as the lead cast to portray Lebo Mathosa in the biopic. Songstress KB is set to play the adult Lebo, while up and coming actress Bahumi landed her defining role of bringing young Lebo to life on screen.
Dream: The Lebo Mathosa Story is a six part mini-series which will depict the life and times of one of South Africa’s most celebrated musicians. Lebo Mathosa was legendary, iconic and an all-round superstar. She embodied South African local music like no other artist of her generation. From the stage to her tabloid personal life, Lebo was a force of nature loved and envied by all who followed her too short but impactful life.
The biopic will feature some of South Africa’s most recognisable faces, including Black Panther’s Connie Chume who will play Ma Mathosa, veteran actor Peter Sephuma as Pa Mathosa, iconic actor Sello Maake Ka Ncube as the family pastor, award winning actress Charmaine Mtinta and choreographer Khabonina Qubeka. 3sum’s Amstel as well as actors, Nyanyiso Dzedze and Jet Novuka join the cast in supporting roles.
Commented Monde Twala, Vice President for MTV, MTV Base and BET at Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa), “The Lebo Mathosa biopic is a first of its kind for BET Africa and we are excited to tell this authentic story of a legend and a diva who culturally inspired an entire generation. This is a true celebration of black excellence and we are proud to capture and share this amazing story. Lebo was a people’s person, her legacy needs to live on for future generations.”
The biopic is an industry collaboration between BET Africa and Ochre Media together with the Gauteng Film Commission and the Department of Trade and Industry who were able to make this project possible through joint funding. The biopic aims to celebrate the star’s meteoric rise to success in a six part mini-series which premieres on Wednesday, 6 November on BET Africa (DStv channel 129) at 21:30 CAT.
